In another ruling favoring marriage equality, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled yesterday (Oct. 18, ’12) that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional and could not be used to deny benefits to married same sex couples.

The ruling on the matter Windsor v. United States cited “In re Estate of Ranftle” in which our firm successfully defended the estate of H. Kenneth Ranftle, which resulted in the first recognition of a surviving same sex spouse in a probate proceeding in New York.

We are proud to be part of this journey towards equality.

We hope this landmark case will go up to the U.S. Supreme Court in this term with a favorable and historic decision by the sitting justices.
